The FTSE 100 closed lower on Tuesday as official figures showed public-sector net borrowing of £18.3 billion in August.
That was £2.9 billion more than a year earlier and above both market and OBR estimates.
Banks and defence names led the fall while Kingfisher jumped after a stronger profit outlook.
