King Charles Confirms Harry and Meghan Remain Non-Working Royals

A letter meant to end confusion

King Charles III has confirmed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain non-working members of the royal family after their return to Britain. A letter issued by the Lord Chamberlain and circulated to government, military and royal representatives said there had been no change in their position.

The couple still may not use the styles His and Her Royal Highness in an official sense. The Sandringham Agreement, struck when they stepped back from senior duties, continues to rule out a half-in, half-out role.

Private citizens with private work

The palace text described their charitable work as a personal matter undertaken in a private capacity. In short, they are to be treated as private citizens with commercial and charitable interests, not as part of the working royal rota.

A spokesperson for the couple told British media they were “a little surprised not to have been told about this in advance.”

What does not change

The clarification does not reopen negotiations on titles, security or official patronages. It is a bureaucratic line drawn after a period of speculation. Working duties remain with the slimmed-down household around the King, the Queen, and the Prince and Princess of Wales.
