A City warning before the Budget

JPMorgan chief executive Jamie Dimon met Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Chancellor John Healey as debate built over a possible windfall-style tax on banks in next month’s Budget, according to reports dated September 10, 2026.

Trade unions have asked ministers to target bank profits. Dimon’s visit was described as a warning against a rise in bank taxes that lenders say would hit lending and London’s competitiveness.

What has been confirmed

No Budget line was published with the meeting. The Treasury has been trying to calm investors ahead of the fiscal event while MPs press the government on defence spending and living costs.

JPMorgan is one of the largest U.S. banks with a substantial London operation.
