Marks & Spencer will take an official London Fashion Week runway slot on 18 September 2026. The debut coincides with the 100th anniversary of the retailer's fashion collection and is designed as a show-to-shop moment: the womenswear and menswear on the catwalk is due to be available immediately online, in UK flagships and in key international markets.

That commercial speed is the point. Many LFW shows are previews of clothes that arrive months later. M&S is using the week as a live lookbook for product that can be bought the same day.

Why the BFC seat matters

A national high-street name on the official schedule is still unusual. The British Fashion Council has spent the past two years trying to widen London's week beyond a handful of luxury appointments. Putting M&S on the calendar is part of that experiment, alongside returning houses such as McQueen and Mulberry.

M&S fashion director commentary around the announcement thanked the BFC for the invitation and pointed to earlier experiments: a streamed international show from Ibiza that drew a large online audience, and a catwalk moment at the British Grand Prix tied to the retailer's Williams Racing partnership.

One hundred years of a fashion offer

M&S is older than its fashion anniversary, but a century of clothing as a named part of the business is a useful hook. The company has spent recent years rebuilding trust in fit, quality and occasion-wear after a long period in which fashion was not its strongest story.

A runway will not settle that rebuilding on its own. It can, however, force a tighter edit. Clothes that must walk under lights in front of editors tend to be clearer than a mid-floor rail. If the collection is priced for the existing customer rather than for the front row, the debut will make sense. If it is only a spectacle, it will be forgotten by October.

The high street around it

Other British fashion retail news this month has been quieter and more corporate: Boden reporting a profit rise with the US contributing strongly, Watches of Switzerland talking of encouraging trading momentum, Dr Martens making leadership appointments, Liberty expanding its jewellery floor. Skims has been preparing a second UK store at Westfield London.

Aaron Esh's first pieces for AllSaints have also landed for autumn, giving a different kind of London-designer-to-high-street pipeline in the same season M&S walks at LFW. Shoppers do not have to pick a single story. They can watch both.

What to look for on the day

The useful questions are cut, colour, price and whether menswear is token or real. Immediate availability should make those answers visible within hours of the show. Location details had not been fully confirmed in earlier announcements; closer to the week the BFC calendar will pin the venue.

For a general reader, the headline is simple. Marks & Spencer is on the London Fashion Week schedule for the first time, it is marking a century of fashion, and it wants the clothes to be in the basket before the next show begins.
